Skill Wagering Rules

Last updated August 2026

1. HitDuel Is a Game of Skill

Chess outcomes are determined exclusively by the relative skill of the two players — no die roll, card draw, or random number generator has any bearing on who wins a match. Courts and regulators in the majority of U.S. states that have addressed the question classify chess, and skill-predominant contests generally, as distinct from games of chance for wagering-law purposes. HitDuel is built around that distinction: it offers head-to-head, server-refereed Chess matches with a fixed, disclosed stake and no house edge, house-banked odds, or randomized outcome of any kind.

2. Server-Authoritative Fair Play

Every move in every match is validated against the standard rules of chess by the game server, never trusted from the client. Clocks, turn order, and match state are likewise entirely server-controlled, so no client-side manipulation can alter the outcome of a game.

3. Automated Anti-Cheat Protocol

HitDuel runs a multi-layered, fully automated integrity system on every match:

  • Post-match engine-correlation analysis. After a match ends, the complete game is independently re-analyzed by a Stockfish chess engine. If a player's moves match the engine's own top three recommended lines at a rate of 98% or higher across a statistically meaningful number of moves, that match is automatically flagged as engine-assisted play.
  • Behavioral tab-focus telemetry. The client reports when a player backgrounds the browser tab or switches to another window specifically while it is their own turn to move. Repeated tab-switching during one's own turn — the exact pattern of consulting an external engine — is logged as a high-risk signal.
  • Move-timing analysis. Unnaturally fast, unnaturally consistent move timing combined with high engine-move-match rates contributes to the same fraud-review pipeline.
  • Mandatory 5-minute verification hold. No payout is released the instant a match ends. Every decisive result first enters a mandatory on-chain "VerificationHold" window during which the automated analysis above completes and can still intervene before any funds move.

4. Consequence of Engine Use: Automatic Stake Slashing

If a match is flagged for engine assistance — whether before settlement or during the verification hold — that match's payout is cancelled outright. The honest opponent is refunded their full stake. The flagged player's stake is not returned: it is forfeited and transferred to the platform treasury. This is enforced on-chain by the HitDuelEscrow smart contract, in two steps: a proposeFreezeAndRefund call records the flag publicly on-chain immediately, followed by a short, fixed on-chain delay before executeFreezeAndRefundMatch actually moves the funds. This delay exists purely as an operational safeguard against server-side error — it is not an appeal window, cannot be triggered or influenced by either player, and cannot be reversed once executed. There is no partial payout for a flagged match.

5. Match Outcomes & Escrow

Stakes are held in a non-custodial USDC escrow contract and released automatically: winner-take-most (minus the disclosed matchmaking fee) on a clean decisive result after the verification hold elapses unflagged; refunded in full to both players on a draw or a void match (e.g. a disconnect before real gameplay began); and handled per Section 4 above for a flagged match.

6. Reporting a Concern

If you believe an opponent cheated and the automated systems above did not catch it, the match record (move history, timing, and engine-correlation report, where available) is retained and can be reviewed manually — contact support with the match identifier shown on your match history.
